At ACS Publications, we recognize the importance of high-quality peer review; the commitment and expertise of our reviewers helps to make our journals the most trusted, most cited, and most read.

Build your scholarly record

Reviewers of manuscripts submitted to ACS journals can now claim credit for their hard work and contributions through a collaboration with ORCID. Reviewers will receive one credit on their ORCID account for all review activity associated with each manuscript reviewed for a given journal.

To claim credit, you simply need to ensure that you have associated your ORCID iD with your ACS Paragon Plus account, granting permission for ACS to deposit activity to your ORCID account. If you do not have an ORCID iD, you can create one using the ORCID link on your ACS Paragon Plus profile page.

Reviews conducted on manuscripts whose final decision was made on or after January 1, 2017 will retroactively be credited to your ORCID account.

You will maintain your anonymity

To ensure the peer review process remains confidential, the deposit process includes a journal-specific embargo period between the manuscript final decision date and eligibility for deposit of credit to ORCID. Your review credit for ACS journals will include the name of the publisher, the journal title, and the date of the credit deposit. It will not contain the manuscript title, date of review, or date of decision.

Q & A

What if you don’t want your review activity to appear in your ORCID account?

If you do not want review credits to be deposited to your ORCID account, you may rescind permission for ACS to update your ORCID account via the ORCID website – orcid.org. ACS Publications Support can provide guidance for that process.

Will you need to opt in or out for each review?

No, if you have granted permission for ACS to deposit activity to your ORCID account, the credits will show with no further action needed. If you wish to turn off the reviewer credit deposits in your ORCID account please visit the ORCID website at orcid.org.

Do you need to have an ORCID iD before you complete your review?

No. When the ACS Reviewer Credit program launches, we will save all completed review activity. When you, as a reviewer, associate an ORCID iD with your ACS Paragon Plus profile, the review records are updated, and previous activity becomes eligible for deposit. Previous peer review activity will automatically be sent to ORCID at the next scheduled delivery time for that journal.

How long will it take for the reviewed paper to appear in your ORCID account?

To ensure the peer review process remains confidential, the deposit process includes a journal-specific embargo period between the manuscript final decision date and eligibility for deposit of credit to ORCID. The embargoes range from a minimum of 60 days to several months.
